Unearthing Architectural Brilliance: Haus M by gronych + dollega architekten

Transforming Mining Shapes into Modern Architecture

Inspired by the archaic shapes of the mining industry, gronych + dollega architekten designed Haus M, a private residence that embodies the essence of a mine in a modern architectural context. This unique design, which won the Golden A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2017, is a testament to the transformative power of architecture.

gronych + dollega architekten's design concept for Haus M was largely influenced by the client's profession as a Markscheider, a surveyor specializing in the mining business. The aim was to transpose typical mining shapes into a contemporary architectural setting. The result is an asymmetric space that mirrors the image of a mine, creating a high room segmented by a sculpturally shaped, suspended gallery layer. This design choice forms a lively and tense spatial structure, with the large frontal terrace plane operating like a stage set, granting the room immense depth.

The construction of Haus M is a testament to the innovative use of materials and technology. The main building's shape is composed of an entirely prefabricated wood frame construction, made up of symmetrically arranged glued wooden beams. The gallery plane, suspended from these beams, appears to float within the main room. The basement and ceiling are made of in-situ concrete, while the terrace's parapet is a single pre-built concrete element. The roof cladding is made from an aluminium alloy, further enhancing the modern aesthetic of the residence.

Located in Tiefenbach, Hessen, Germany, Haus M was completed in 2012. The design project was a meticulous process that required a deep understanding of spatial impressions within the main room, depending on perspective. The monolithic flair of the interior, coupled with the vividly composed outside elements, imitate the archaic shapes of traditional mining structures, transformed into modern architecture.

The design of Haus M presented several challenges, primarily due to its experimental architecture. The resulting geometry and artisanal execution required immense passion and concentration from all parties involved. The building's shape is intended to mimic an extract of a mine, with the residence's interior revolving around the living room, which measures 6 meters in height and is divided by a gallery layer. This open and tense spatial structure is complemented by the frontal terrace plane, which creates additional depth within the room.

gronych + dollega architekten's Haus M is a shining example of how design can transform traditional shapes into modern architecture. The residence's unique design and innovative use of materials have earned it the prestigious Golden A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2017. This award is granted to outstanding creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom, embodying extraordinary excellence and significantly impacting the world with their desirable characteristics.
